The pulsating pair dictating the rhythm

by Emmanuel Faith

Have you ever listened to a melodious choir sing in rapturous voices that make you witness heaven on earth? You notice the sonorous soprano singers, alternating alto singers, titillating tenor singers and probably the pulsating and  buzzing bass voices with brimming boom.

If it is a concert, like Beyoncé at Coachella or Yanni for Nightingale, you would notice the lissom ladies wriggling vigorously, grabbing your attention with your gaze fixed, but not the focused drummer whose rhythm determines the flow of the renditions or the guitarist and keyboardist whose scintillating strings adds melody to the lyrics. Would you?

Nobody expected a club with a young coach (in age and experience), a plague of injuries and a shackle of a transfer ban to sit comfortably on the fourth position of the league just two points adrift of the second placed Mighty Manchester city and notching five straight league wins. Chelsea have however, damned all odds thanks to the coordinated tenacity and brilliance of a team of youngsters hungry for success.

Praise has been sung for the English talents, Mount, Abraham and Tomori and Captain America; Christian Pulisic  who recently stamped his place in Lampard’s effervescent army thanks to his heroics. However, there are two uncelebrated heroes whose efforts needs to be enunciated; Kovacic and Jorginho.

Not Enough Attention

Jorginho was almost lynched last year by Chelsea fans for being the player who took Kante’s place and Kovacic just had a normal season on loan thanks to Sarri’s rigidity in style. The new tenure under a new coach whose philosophy is fluidity  has unlocked their hidden talents with the pair displaying pulsating performances in different games.

Jorginho, whose defensive abilities was often questioned last season has made the most tackles (25) and interceptions (20) this season, out-performing midfield screeners like Fabinho and Rodri in both metrics while Kovacic managed 100% completion rate of take-ons, duels and successful tackles in his last match.

The midfield maestros have continuously delivered sterling performances for the team, being a pivot when attacking and a shield when defending, giving Frank a selection headache when Kante and Loftus-Cheek returns.

Like the drummer dictating rhythm in the background, Jorginho and Kovacic keep dictating Chelsea’s game pace and if the Blue Army sustain this form till the end of the season, the pulsating pair must not have a dip in form.
