It’s not every season you witness two teams in a football league win 90+ points. It can be described as a once-in-a-life-time event. We are lucky to be witnesses to the unimaginable records being set by Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League this season.
Pep Guardiola’s side followed in the footsteps of Liverpool in MatchDay 37. The Citizens needed to dig in deep to get the better of a stubborn Leicester City.
And so the title race will go down to the wire, to the last day.
So many Manchester City fans would have settled for the kind of smooth ride they had last season. For those who have forgotten, by this time last season:
• Manchester City had already won the league
• At this stage last season, they had already amassed 97 points
• They’d go on ahead to become Centurions after defeating Southampton
Fast forward to a few months later and not much difference can be found between the Manchester City of the 2017/2018 season and the 2018/2019 edition of the Manchester Blues.
Or maybe the difference is much bigger than what it seems on the surface.
For a side whose style of play has not changed yet, has been forced to wait until the final day to be crowned champions, surely there’s a difference.
That difference is one of the things that has made City so special this campaign. How else do we explain that this same Man. City side, during the season, was at least seven points behind?
It’s easy to blame Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC. How could they have let such a huge lead slip out of their hands? However, we forget to give credit to a side that strategically positioned itself to take advantage of its opponent’s mistakes.
No doubt, Liverpool and others (not including Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United) stepped up their game this season. It was like they, especially Liverpool, tried to step up to where Man. City was last season.
By the time they had finished stepping up, Pep Guardiola’s side had already moved on. And that is what has made them so special this season.
Only a few sides can boast of winning 13 games in a row in the Almighty Premier League. Manchester City didn’t just do that. They blew away all opposition in sight at a time when it was needed the most!
That singular feat is what will separate first from second in the Premier League this season.
What’s so special about this Manchester City side?
This question is relative.
So many will talk about Pep Guardiola. Others will be mention how Bernardo Silva has stepped up to the plate and has consistently done incredible things for Manchester City. Another set will single out the PFA Young Player of the Year as the answer to this question.
Regardless of what your answer is, the opinion is a general one. This Manchester City side has been so special, they making it seem as if Liverpool is having a bad season. The margin is still too close to call. We still have to wait until the final whistle of the season to find out who the 18/19 Premier League champ is.
Nevertheless, while we wait, who/what do you think makes Manchester City so special? Are they even special at all? Drop your comments and share your thoughts with us.
