You Think David De Gea is the Problem? Think Again.

David de Gea has made three errors leading to goals in Manchester United’s recent games.

The Spaniard’s last two games – against Manchester City and Chelsea – are games to forget as quickly as possible for the goalie. To a large extent, he has received the bulk of the blame from ALL QUARTERS.

Why not? He’s the goalkeeper after all, the one whose mistakes is the most obvious when it occurs. He is David de Gea, the one goalkeeper that Man. Utd used to boast of, brag about and make memes out of his brilliant performances.

De Gea

David De Gea: The One-Time Hero

At one point, he used to be the most wanted goalkeeper in the world – I daresay he still is, despite his recent challenges. There’s no way a player of his calibre can be spared with his recent performances, right?

Football fans are notorious for their short memories. If it’s going their way, you’re their hero. Your face is splashed all over the newspaper pages and you’re the talk of the town.

If you’re David de Gea whose errors has cost Man. Utd dearly in the top four race, the fans quickly forget how good you’ve been in times past.

Fans quickly forget your heroics, refuse to cut you some slack and heap all the blame on your head. They forget that you’re playing with other deadweights who are collectively slowing down the team and making 6th place an lovely abode.

Those fans very quickly forget that there was a goalkeeper before those three errors.

Aren’t we all plagued by this short term memory of a thing?

Sadly, it has no cure.

Instead of concentrating on the cure, how about the concentration shifts to how De Gea is not the only problem Man. Utd and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have?

For the umpteenth time, we need to stop blaming a goalkeeper that does not have a single top-notch defender to protect him.
You’re probably thinking of the current Man. Utd defenders. Think hard.

Take your time – if you need it.

What did you find?

I can guess all you came up with is a list of defenders who have failed to grow (Smalling and Phil Jones) or have seen better days (Ashley Young).

We can all blame David de Gea. Or we can conclude that the poor goalkeeper does not have any defender worthy of playing in the same team with him.

Sounds harsh? Well, here’s another angle.

Below is a list of the defenders currently playing their trade at Man. Utd:

• V. Lindelöf
• E. Bailly
• P. Jones
• Smalling
• M. Rojo
• Young
• Diogo Dalot
• Shaw
• Valencia
• M. Darmian

  1. Which of these defenders can compare to Virgil van Dijk who became only the sixth defender to be crowned the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in the award’s history and has helped Alisson keep so many clean sheets?
  2. Which of these defenders can stroll into any of the starting XI’s of the major clubs in today’s football?
  3. For the United fans: Which of these defenders would you like to see stay? Maybe one or two?

For all the noise about David de Gea’s recent goalkeeping errors, some of these defenders have had a hand in them.

There nothing any of them could do about the goals Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane scored in the Mancunian derby. There’s little they could do to prevent Alonso effort in that 1-1 draw.

De Gea

Chelsea players celebrate after taking advantage of David de Gea’s error

However, the question remains: Are they doing enough to help De Gea? If the answer is no, why is De Gea getting all the stick? If the answer is yes, what do you think of David De Gea now? Is he the culprit in the Red Devil army that needs to be eliminated/removed/sold?

Whilst I agree the defence needs to do more to help De Bea through this mess, I don’t agree that they’re the big reason he’s faltered in recent games. Low-block, shadow screening to make any opposition attempt tame enough for Dave? Yes!
Before the spills, there have been lots of misplaced passes that immediately put the defence under pressure, originated from De Gea(He’s no sweeper-keeper,yet!). Aside that, there’s been the issue of attempting to save almost every shot at his goal with his leg…even when the logical move would be the hands. I think it’s been more of decision making problems recently.

A glimmer of hope for United fans tho… this is the type of rut every big goalie experiences at some point in their career. I think he’ll come out of this stronger and better- contract renewal or not.

But first, that United midfield must be sorted for steel and creative balance

    1. He has his own fair share of the blame game. But the way most fans are going on about it, you’d have thought De Gea was the only player in the Manchester United set up.

When you say ‘sorted,’ do you mean sell some players or buy new ones?

      1. Buy, groom…whatever. That midfield needs to be a lot more! All members of that department have been all over the place in recent seasons. Imagine Darron Gibson and Tom Cleverly being more consistently efficient on the average than this lot. or the ageing combo of Carrick and Scholes making these present guys look like amateurs. That defence will improve if midfield wasn’t as all over the place, if the defence is better screened, the goalie will be better protected.
