ForTheGoal’s Olakunle Agboola, Ayo Mathew and Fijasewa Arogunyo give their verdict on the CHAN Eagles squad list.
AM: No single player from MFM is on that list. Onouha had a fantastic season at MFM yet he didn’t make the list. Nassarawa goalie Suraj Oyeleso kept 16 clean sheets in 38 league games and he didn’t make the list. Destiny Achaje from Kastina United didn’t make that list. I really don’t understand what we (CHAN Eagles) are going to do in Morocco.
FJ: Why am I not surprised? I mean! The only club that has a high moral ground has its players not considered. It’s a blessing in disguise for MFM FC.
OA: I have mixed feelings… But this says a lot about the league and the system.
AM: I really don’t understand what we are going to do in Morocco. I think Salisu Yusuf is a big joke. With this selection, he has gone against his own principles.
OA: It’s funny though. I think he has gone with experience, players he knows well, who he thinks knows the rigors and technicalities of the CHAN game. I think that considering the fact that MFM FC has spent just two seasons in the league. Compared to people he has worked with or known for 4-5 years.
FJ: You take your Form players to big tournaments. MFM FC and players were on song last season. It’s like England going to the WC without Kane and taking Sturridge or Nigeria not taking Ighalo to the WC because Martins has been there longer. It’s folly.
This is our best shot at winning the CHAN. Only Morocco have the quality to best us. We give massive respect to our competition but, all other teams have leagues and players of lesser quality. Experience and Youth is the blend… Besides, this experience he is relying on has failed us twice!
AM: Exactly! Kingsley Eduwo didn’t make that list because Salisu said he found better players. Onuwa of MFM was solid last season. He said some players already signed for foreign clubs which is understandable. We have a good chance of winning this tournament but with this selection of players…. I don’t think so anymore.
FJ: You look again. And not seeing Sikiru Olatunbosun makes me worry. This guy lit up the NPFL last season. We can only wish them well and support. But in terms of expectations, we’d be better be tempering them right now with these selections.
Below is the list of the final 23 of the CHAN Eagles.
Goalkeepers: Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Enyimba FC), Oladele Ajiboye (Plateau United), Theophilus Afelokhai (Enyimba FC)
Defenders: Osas Okoro (Rangers International), Daniel James (Plateau United), Kalu Orji Okogbue (Rangers International), Ikouwem Udoh (Enyimba FC), Abdullahi Musa (Wikki Tourists), Timothy Danladi (Katsina United); Ifeanyi Nweke (Kano Pillars), Stephen Eze (Kano Pillars)
Midfielders: Ifeanyi Ifeanyi (Akwa United), Emeka Atuloma (Rivers United), Rabiu Ali (Kano Pillars), Augustine Oladapo (Enyimba FC), Ekundayo Ojo (Sunshine Stars)
Forwards: Anthony Okpotu (Lobi Stars), Eneji Moses (Plateau United), Ibrahim Mustapha (Enyimba FC), Emeka Ogbugh (Rivers United), Sunday Faleye (Akwa United), Nura Muhammed (El-Kanemi Warriors), Okechukwu Gabriel (Akwa United)
With the NPFL starting off on the 14th of January, will the absence of these players affect the performance of their clubs? Is the chance for a MFM FC, with a full squad, to create an early advantage over the others in the Nigerian Professional League?
